We are talking about the Tuscan Maremma, the one that goes from Follonica to Capalbio, not the Lazio Maremma that begins immediately after the border. A completely different territory, with its own identity.

We at La Pulledraia live in Alberese, in the heart of the Maremma Park, just a few minutes from the sea. We know these beaches season by season: we know when they are deserted, when they fill up, where to park and when it is worth taking the extra 10 minutes to get to the lesser-known one.

The beaches of the Tuscan Maremma do not resemble those of the rest of Tuscany. Here the coast is still largely wild, protected by nature reserves, intact dunes and Mediterranean scrub that reaches the water. No establishments every hundred meters, no loud music, no umbrellas lined up for kilometers. This guide is the result of years of direct experience, not online research.

The beaches of the Maremma Park — the closest to us

The beaches within the Maremma Natural Park are the wildest and most protected on the Tuscan coast. Access is regulated: you need to buy a ticket at the Alberese Visitor Center. From La Pulledraia it takes less than 10 minutes by car.

Marina di Alberese — the free beach of the Park

The beach of Marina di Alberese is about 10 km long and is almost completely free. No establishments, no bars — just sand, pine forest and dunes. It can be reached by the Park shuttle from the Alberese Visitor Center (essential in summer: parking is limited).

Distance from La Pulledraia: 8 km, about 10 minutes

Access: Park entrance ticket + seasonal shuttle

Dogs: not allowed in summer

Best time: May–June and September (less crowded, already warm sea)

Ideal for: those seeking silence, families with older children, birdwatchers

Cala di Forno — the hidden beach of the Park

Cala di Forno is small, small, difficult to reach and for this reason it is worth double. You can first arrive by shuttle from the Alberese Visitor Center, then on foot through the Mediterranean scrub. The name comes from the ancient ovens where coal was produced, which was then loaded onto boats towards Talamone. The water is transparent and the seabed shallow in the first part.

Distance from La Pulledraia: 12 km + 45 minutes walk from the shuttle point

Access: Park ticket required, route by reservation in high season

Best period: June and September (July and August must be booked in advance)

Ideal for: those who really want to disconnect, hikers, couples without small children

The most beautiful free beaches — from Grosseto to Castiglione

Marze Beach — 6 km of pine forest and dunes

The Marze beach extends for almost 6 km between Marina di Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia, protected by a pine forest and dunes covered with vegetation. It is almost all free, up to 100 meters wide, frequented by those who love outdoor sports: kitesurfers, runners, families with children.

Distance from La Pulledraia: 25 km, about 25 minutes

Access: free, parking along the main road

Best time: all year round — also great out of season

Ideal for: families, water sports, walks by the sea

Cala Violina — the beach that plays

Cala Violina is probably the most famous beach in the Maremma and deserves it. It is located in the municipality of Scarlino, in the Rimigliano nature reserve. You can get there on foot with a walk of about 1.5 km in the woods (easy, suitable for everyone). The name comes from the sound of the white sand under your feet: as you walk, it produces a sound similar to the violin.

Access is limited: in high season you need to book parking and the entrance ticket to the reserve online.

– Distance from La Pulledraia: 45 km, about 45 minutes

– Access: reserve entrance ticket + paid parking, online booking recommended in July and August

– Best time: June and September to avoid crowds

– Ideal for: couples, nature lovers, those who want postcard water

The beaches towards Castiglione and Monte Argentario

Rocchette beach — rocks, coves and crystal clear seabed

In the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia, just south of Punta Ala, the Rocchette Beach alternates stretches of free beach with equipped establishments. The name comes from the rocks overlooking the sea, where you can sunbathe and dive directly. The water is clear thanks to the rocky bottom.

Distance from La Pulledraia* 40 km, approx. 35 minutes

Access: free in free stretches, establishments with umbrella available

Best time: June and September

Ideal for: those who love rocks, couples, those who prefer to have services at their fingertips

Feniglia beach — 7 km in the natural oasis of Orbetello

La Feniglia is one of the strips of land that connect the mainland to Monte Argentario, in the municipality of Orbetello. 7 km long, it is protected by the natural oasis of Feniglia, with fallow deer, herons and flamingos visible walking in the pine forest behind the beach. The bottom is shallow and the sand soft — great for kids.

Distance from La Pulledraia: 55 km, about 50 minutes

Access: free, paid parking at the entrances

Dogs: allowed in some sections out of season

Best time: May, June, September — July and August is very popular

Ideal for: families with children, nature lovers, birdwatching

Capalbio beach — the last beach in the Tuscan Maremma

Capalbio beach is the last beach in the Tuscan Maremma before the border with Lazio — from here begins the Lazio Maremma, a territory different in landscape and traditions. Wide, sandy, with free stretches and stretches with establishments. The hilltop village of Capalbio is one of the most beautiful medieval villages in the Tuscan Maremma — pairing them is the way to go.

Distance from La Pulledraia: 65 km, about 55 minutes

Access: free in the free sections

Best time: June and September

Ideal for: those who combine sea and cultural visit, families with services

When to go and where to stay in Maremma

The Maremma has a longer bathing season than you think.
